The social media-fueled experience economy is damaging the earth’s natural landscapes. In 2018 over two million tourists visited Iceland, a nation with a population of just under 350,000, compared to just 600,000 visitors in 2011. As a direct result of the increased footfall and the effects from unusually warm temperatures, many of the locations shown in Justin Bieber’s music video “I’ll Show You” which has been viewed 479 million times, have been closed off to allow for the ground to recover. The earth’s landscape is suffering from the consequences of warming global temperatures and from a supply chain of mass anthropocentric behaviours defined by algorithms.
